Review of The Company Men (2010) by Johnny H — 11 Nov 2013
Pretty decent - a little bleak, but very real - and also a little alien. It's hard to imagine a country where a job - any job - would be so hard to find, and how employment would define almost every aspect of who you are.
Also interesting - and a little telling of the zeitgeist of the time - that none of the three alternatives were another job. SME, suicide, and owned enterprise. It also gives off a strong sense of nostalgia, a desire for a return to a simpler time where the world still made sense.
I wish I could say there was a happy ending, but I know there isn't - just some unhappy endings more drawn out than others.
