Review of The Commuter (2018) by Jesse C — 16 Jan 2018
Liam Neeson is back... and they've got his family again. He's got a "special set of skills" again too (he's an ex-cop), and that's why "they," a group of unknown antagonists, decide to single him out as their patsy; he has to commit a murder, or they'll kill his family.
The overused plot and setting are not the only ailments this movie suffers from; the backstory is underdeveloped, and the characters are poorly drawn. We don't have any time at all to become invested in his relationship with his family.
The early scenes are a rushed, perfunctory exercise that the writers virtually ignored so as not to delay the train-action scenes. The result is that we don't feel fully immersed in Neeson's desperation as he struggles with the ethics of his predicament.
Despite this flaw, and an absolute lack of any clever plot-twists, the acting almost sells it. Neeson and Farmiga (in her limited role) give performances that bring value to a script that is otherwise a waste of 1 hour and 45 minutes.
