Review of The Comedy (2012) by Chris P — 30 Oct 2012
Not a comedy. Just remember that. Tim Heidecker plays a rich slob in his 30's, moving around aimlessly through life offending people by saying the most horrible, non-politically correct things possible and then trying to hide behind the notion that people who don't laugh simply don't have a sense of humor.
It is the story of what kind of person you can become when all you have in your life is money. This would make the film almost impossibly difficult to watch, but Heidecker's performance keeps you engaged, which is strange because I can't really say it was good acting.
Your average film patron will watch this and think it was one of the worst films they have ever seen, even fans of Tim and Eric are likely to be let down if they were expecting an actual comedy, but many will find Heidecker's portrayal of Swanson to be disarming at times, even showing moments of actual humanity in between nihilistic rants.
There were still a couple of laugh out loud parts in The Comedy, but they really depend on how dark your sense of humor is willing to go and how you interpreted certain scenes. This film will likely be held up by many as being revolutionary while at the same time turning people off after only watching 2 minutes, the truth is that it's just another drama with pitch black comedy elements that sits somewhere in the middle of the road.
