Review of The Colors of the Mountain (2011) by Cristina G — 05 Jan 2012
Set in the Colombian countryside, The Colors of the Mountain, is a coming age film about a young boy who is living in a country with civil unrest. Early on in the film he is rather oblivious to this civil war that is beginning to break out, with Soccer serving as the main thing that occupies his time.
As the film progresses we are given a startling portrait of how war changes everything around this young boy and forces him to grow up far too fast. The Color of the Mountain really uses its beautifully setting to great affect.
The lush, vast countryside gives a sense of tranquility in the beginning that is quickly turned into chaos. It does a good job of staying with the child's perspective the entire film and except for a few occasional Hollywoodisms of forced emphasis, is quite subtle and genuine in its approach of civil war and it's affect on the youth of the countryside.
