Review of The Color Purple (1985) by William Z — 23 Feb 2011
Whoopi Goldberg made her cinematic debut, and she couldn't have picked a better movie to do it. The underlying themes of sexism, racism, and poverty allow us to completely sympathize with Celie, the main character, and the other abused individuals in the setting.
The film also tackles the theme of standing up to those who oppress you, and examines the strength of sibling bonds. It is another one of those "hard-to-watch" movies because of some of the domestic violence that takes place, but "The Color Purple" is a story told with grace, and it one of my favorite films by Steven Spielberg.
