Review of The Color Purple (1985) by Graeme H — 08 Jul 2011
Sad, tragic and intense-- though sugar-coated-- the film is of a feel-good sort, but of a higher register than the standard feel-good. Spielberg's atmospheric filmmaking is the best he's done and the period is very well-rendered.
Certain moments of musical fervor become somewhat contrived, but the film works.
