Review of The Color Purple (1985) by Adam S — 03 Feb 2013
Featuring early performances from the likes of Danny Glover, Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey and Laurence Fishburne, Spielberg's adaptation of "The Color Purple" is perhaps a tad long, but a strong look at prejudice in American society nonetheless.
The strongest performance, I thought, was from Glover, who portrayed a cruel man who *SPOILER* eventually finds redemption.
But it's strength is in the portrayal of family, and the meaning thereof. An early attempt of sentimentality by Spielberg, and it paved the way for some brilliant films later on.
