Watched 'The Colour Purple' directed by the legendary Steven Spielberg starring Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey. It's a bildungsroman tale of a girl who was pregnant by her father when she was merely 14 and then separated from her two children only to be married to an abusive widower.

She was then separated from her sister for so many years. She was beaten by her husband into silence until Sofia and Shug came into her life, which soon developed her into a woman with self-esteem and courage.

The story, which is based upon a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker, is one of sisterly love, abuse, poverty, racism and sexism. This Oscar-nominated film is practically the grandmother of that other Oscar-winning film about strong black women as well, 'The Help'.

Overall, this is one of Steven Spielberg's most heartfelt stories. Unlike 'The Help', this film incorporates darker moments and some 'Oh-No-You-Didn't' b*tchin' scenes as well (courtesy of Miss Oprah Winfrey).

The cinematography is top-notch with gorgeous shots of plains with violet flowers dotting the sea of green and also of the silhouettes of the characters against the sunlight. I was tearing up a lot in this movie: out of joy, sadness and immense laughter.

After watching this film, I now wish that Steven Spielberg return to his old trade of warm, nostalgic and heartfelt stories--he did for 'War Horse' and 'Tintin' but sadly, 'Lincoln', not doubt one of the best and perfectly done films of 2012 and of the century, fell short of that.

Now here's me, anticipating for the next Spielberg film and hoping that he might try and return to his old trade again.
