Review of The Color of Money (1986) by Alex K — 10 Aug 2013
I enjoyed it more than the Hustler for a few reasons. To me it seemed a little more focused, which is not saying that the hustler lacked focus, but rather that this one had a definite goal at the end and a plan to get there.
I also enjoyed Scorsese's fantastic direction, and Newman is even better in this movie. Tom Cruise is good as he usually is, despite his stupid hair. It doesn't really have much to do with The Hustler, aside from Fast Eddie, and even then it's really loose.
He could have been someone else and it would have been the same movie. But it was nice to see Newman returning as a familiar face, and having some backstory fleshed out his character. For me, it was am improvement, if only slightly, and a very interesting move by Scorsese.
