Review of The Colony (2013) by Ryan L — 29 Jul 2013
The Colony is... an interesting movie to say the least. Now, that 0% score is totally fuckin stupid.
Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix), Bill Paxton (Aliens) and Kevin Zegers (Dawn of the Dead), headline an all-star cast in this savage and unrelenting thriller about mankind's greatest enemy: himself. As an endless winter engulfs Earth, humans struggle to survive in remote underground outposts. When Colony 7 receives a distress call from a nearby settlement, Sam (Zegers) and Briggs (Fishburne) race through the snow on a dangerous rescue mission. What they find at the desolate base could mean mankind's salvation-or its total annihilation. Terrifying discoveries will unfold that will change the rules of survival forever. (RT summary).
Now, this film has its problems. The cliches are all over the place, the so called "Threat to humanity" is incredibly predictable and we've seen it a thousand times before. So what makes me give this a 60%?. Well, the film first of all is gorgeous looking. I love the locales and setting. I love films like this where the biggest threat is the icy cold. I like the action, which is really well shot and well edited. I like the make-up effects, and I really like the actors and this cast of characters. Now, the ending of the movie is A.Predictable, B.Predictable, C.Predictable, and D.Lame.
Overall The Colony is an above-average sci-fi action flick that, while it definitely won't win any awards any time soon, is a fun ride.
