Review of The Collection (2012) by Jesse V — 30 Nov 2012
Having the same director/writer doing the sequel in my opinion is always a benefit as it allows the style, creativity and purpose of the stories to mirror one another. Dunstan uses his unique vision to expound on a truly twisted tale. Having said this, the overall style of the film is drastically different from the original. This may turn off people who were attracted to the first film by it's intimate, griddy cinematography and abstract soundtrack. The Collection is a much more straight forward gore fest and much less an artsy independent film with a dark side.
I feel that this is the major weakness of the film. It will surely delite fans of the later Saw and Hostile films, however the original film did not rely on gore and torture (Although both did exist) and focused more on a truly gripping plot and scenario. Characters are introduced to the film for the sheer purpose of being meat puppets and have very little development. The film did do a decent job of expounding on the insane world that the first film introduced.
In conclusion, the film is a decent sequel for it's originality and ingenuity, but disappointing in comparison to the original. I give the film a 6 out of 10.
