Review of The Collection (2012) by Ricky R — 01 Dec 2012
Grisly and bloody, this horror gem goes straight for the jugular, relentlessly slashing and tearing until the edge of the seat is your last stand. Ok, ok... it isn't really that intense, but it does offer quite a few scenes where gruesome overwhelms tact.
.. and yet the gore of this film never feels out of place or over done. This is a movie where the protagonists are in the antagonist's house and he's got a bunch of tricks ready to make them pay for the intrusion.
Not all of the characters are developed beyond being flesh sticks, but there are a couple that get moments that flesh them out enough to the point where thier fate seems a little important. But this film's true moment of gore-tastic grace is the brutal opening which may feature the highest body count in horror-film history (don't quote me on that).
Whoever thought it up is truly a twisted individual. A negative aspect of the film is that there are quite a few plot holes and the initial direction of the film after the opener flows way to easily, which given the events leading to the moment, seems a bit off kilter.
Still, Stewart and fitzpatrick do an excellent job being the captives to root for, even as the walls crumble around them in gory terror.
