Review of The Collection (2012) by Cheyne L — 27 Dec 2012
It's time to move beyond genre cliche and great truly great horror films, and it is possible, movies like 'excision' or 'cabin in the woods' or even 'V/H/S' would be a better investment of your time, and those are three great examples of films that are deconstructive of the 'genres' you could supposedly place them into, however 'the collection' is a derivative mess, and although the set pieces are impressive enough, the convoluted editing ruins any chance of creating an atmosphere.
archetype "SAW''-like characters run around lost and motivated through arbitrary dialogue and genre conventions. I didn't see the first one, but fuck this movie, someone's just trying to make a buck, where-as a low budget film like -saw when it came out, made the most of their low budget through great direction and production design, not to mention above par editing.
