Review of The Collection (2012) by Bevan C — 29 Mar 2013
I didn't think this film was that bad honestly. I mean, I really did think parts of the film were incompetent, mostly towards the beginning and the gore, again at the beginning, was a little over the top for me.
But the film does settle down in the middle. To be honest, outside of the last 20 minutes or so which were actually really cool, I found this film to be largely dull and uninteresting Saw-inspired fare.
Don't get me wrong, there is stuff here that will satisfy some gore-hounds but, at the same time, it's not like the film offers anything that would differentiate it from other gore films. I suppose it wasn't supposed to reinvent the genre.
But then again, it should be expected that a lot of people would be unenthusiastic because you're doing something that's been done countless other times before with varying degrees of success.
While a large part of the film was really, to be honest, boring, for some reason the last 20 minutes of the film were really good. I thought they were well shot and edited, whereas the rest of the film wasn't, and the score during this scene was also really good.
So it's surprising that the last moments of the film felt so inspired. Especially when compared to everything else in the flick. It's such a shame that the film turned out this way. It could and SHOULD'VE been better considering how strong the last 20 minutes were, so I don't know what went wrong with the rest of the film.
