Review of The Collection (2012) by Austin W — 16 Apr 2013
Just watched The Collection. If you saw The Collector and enjoyed it, you're probably looking for more Arkin vs the Collector. I didn't find this fim as gory as most of the critics did. Those critics are weak-stomached, thin-skinned, and I think they deliberately missed the point of what the filmmakers were trying to do.
It's not about the gore--it's about the story. The Collector as a character is a neat creation. The story itself isn't very strong. Would've been stronger if they'd focused more on Arkin and less on the girl.
There wasn't nearly as much tension as in the first movie and there weren't nearly as many clever traps. Much less sadism than what the other critics suggest, and MUCH less sadism than the first movie.
I mainly spent the movie cheering on Arkin, not because he was doing something awesome (although he has his moments), but because I WANTED him to do something awesome. There's more they could have done, and I hope they make another.
They could call it The Collected. Let me add that at the end of this movie, I had a big smile on my face. Of course, I was smiling through much of the movie. I was just happy to be watching it.Movie: 3 stars, plus 1 star for Arkin.
Maybe I'm being generous, but the ending is well worth it.
