Review of The Cold Light of Day (2012) by Roy Hector K — 29 Oct 2012
Another movie that I have absolutely no idea about, but highly recommended by the DVD seller. And it turned out to be a pretty good one. I guess I need to start trusting more these sellers on their recommendations.
It is basically a spy thriller, and it works very well mainly because it stuck closely to the main protagonist's point of view as someone who was reluctantly drawn into a web of espionage. As a result, there is a lot of uncertainty and unpredictability as the movie progresses. You sort of know what happened and what could happen, but you are not really sure, and that's what makes it an effective thriller.
That meant the film started out a bit slow because of the lack of highlights, but soon finds its groove once the action scenes started.
Henry Cavill I felt gave a spectacular performance in this film. He is reluctant, vulnerable and naive, and at the same time because of his physical presence (tall and fit), he is somewhat believable as someone who could pull an upset against the forces of spy professionals going against him.
Sigourney Weaver also has her moments as the malevolent villain in the film, but is a bit awkward and slow in the action scenes, especially the ones involving shooting.
Overall, a pretty good and effective thriller, highly recommended.
