Review of The Cobbler (2014) by Kevin P — 13 Mar 2015
After getting back some credentials from em with last year's massively underrated Men, Women & Children, Adam Sandler blows it in this bewildering misfire from the usually great Tom McCarthy. Here, Sandler is quiet and restrained which is fine but it's truly bizarre to think he's not given a single funny thing to do in this movie.
Instead, every other character is. The movie's tone is everywhere, its attempts at humor are undermined by the sentimental music, the drama is undermined by the mawkish dialogue, the third act is a thriller and is completely out of place and the last ten minutes feel like the end of a superhero origin story.
The line about dry cleaners may be the only thing I found funny but other than that not a single joke hit. The best thing I can say about the movie is that Adam Sandler is still as likable as he normally is in these roles but all in all, The Cobbler is a huge disappointment.
