Review of The Cobbler (2014) by Melissa A — 15 Jan 2016
The Cobbler is nothing more than a stupid, sleep inducing, waste of time and money that I do not recommend you watching. It's unimaginative with a poorly written script that doesn't know what kind of story it wants to tell and is all over the place. It isn't helped that Adam Sandler is abysmal in the role. As matter of fact I find his acting to be highly questionable. Some scenes he does okay but in others he his just playing awful. It was solid proof to me along time ago that the guy wasn't attempting to change his style of comedy but in this film, it honestly feels like he isn't trying at least because he hardly gives off any jokes worth listening too or simply nothing at all. I didn't laugh once. Now to give this film some credit, it starts out we'll. The film seems to be going for a magical surrealism approach which I personally found to be an interesting idea but once the film gets to second and third half, it all goes down hill. It isn't helped when the film finally gets to the climax with a stupid end reveal and none of it is particularly satisfying because the journey getting there is just so boring. The one highlight I will mention is the scene where The cobbler's mother is dying in bed and is dying morning for her husband and Adam Sandler's character disguises himself as her husband so she can be happy just before she dies. This is easily the film's strongest portion and is the one scene I admit I did feel invested but at the end, the rest of the film is just a one big train wreck. I'd hate to say it but it's just another cheap Adam Sandler monstrosity that does nothing more than exist.
The final verdict: 2/10.
