Review of The Cloverfield Paradox (2018) by Kyle M — 24 May 2018
I applaud Netflix for trying to be a alternative resource to Big Hollywood, and I think many "Netflix Original" movies are quite good, and up until now, I had sorta liked the original "Cloverfield" and I actually really liked "10 Cloverfield Lane" , and although the Cloverfield series has seemed to hop and skip along, creating gaps and "paradoxes" of it's own within the very canon of the Cloverfield universe, The Cloverfield Paradox takes that method beyond what one could imagine and completely bombs it in everyway possible.
Granted, it's a tolerable film, but just marginally lives up to even the most cliche sci-fi/thriller/action films, leaving the viewer scratching their head wondering what in the world it was they just watched.
What really made this film tank wasn't so much the main plot, but the fact that before this became The Cloverfield Paradox, it was actually meant to be a big budget film called "The God Particle", which on it's own may have made a worthwhile film.
It's the fact that once Paramount sold the rights to the film to Netflix, as well as Netflix acquiring the rights to the Cloverfield Series, it was the unimaginative melding of the two storylines together that was the bitter undoing of this film.
The Cloverfield story is loosely tied into the main plot, and not really making sense in the final moments of the film. Granted, if you have a Netflix subscription, then this a free watch, and at the very least, worth the time on a lazy night, but it doesn't even come within the vicinity of winning an emmy, much less worthy mention.
