Review of The Cloverfield Paradox (2018) by Anthony B — 06 Feb 2018
Competently made, well acted, modestly budgeted space thriller that is in no way a Cloverfield film. Literally. This was originally conceived as something else entirely having nothing to do with the Cloverfield franchise, and for a film that is supposed to provide answers/closure to questions left lingering in ambiguity from the previous two installments, it sucks.
The Cloverfield Paradox is a prequel of sorts that attempts to explain the Cloverfield universe so convolutedly and cryptically that it just ends up presenting more theories and leaves the audience either scratching their heads or straight up banging them against the nearest wall.
Watch this film once as a curious throwaway just to understand why Netflix decided to market it (or rather not market it) the way they did. Don't get me wrong, it is not the worst Sci-Fi movie you will see this year but here is a list of other space set films I would sooner watch again: Jason X, Leprechaun 4, Critters 4, Moonraker.
