Review of The Cloverfield Paradox (2018) by Jonas D — 06 Feb 2018
Originally intended to be a stand-alone movie, Paramount and Bad Robot decided to fit it into the successful Cloverfield franchise.
Equipped with a mostly good looking set and an ensamble of good actors, this movie is sadly messed up by the attempt to connect it somehow to the previous Cloverfield movies.
This creates inconsistencies in the plot, results in underdeveloped characters and overall a mixture of many science-fiction franchises and fails to keep the tension. This is all underlined by the inclusion of a neglected side-plot on Earth where the viewers notice that it was included in the last steps of production, where the remaining budget is low and time is short.
Netflix was able to land a coup with their announcment at the superbowl and this resulted in media attention and high views. But there is a reason why Paramount sold this movie to Netflix and that is because they noticed how it would fail at the box office. In the end, everyone benefits, except the viewers who sacrificed an hour of their precious lifetime they will never get back.
