Review of The Cloverfield Paradox (2018) by Istvan S — 06 Feb 2018
Pretty decent SFX, and that's about it. There are a lot of things that will have you scratching your head along the way, such a how a 3D printer can print a gun, projectiles, AND GUNPOWDER? The sound effects for this gun go from a loud explosive bang (traditional gun) that resounds through the hull of the station, to a whispering air gun sound up close.
Did you know that a carbon dioxide (CO2) is an explosive gas? I'm a chemist and that's news to me. Three people are apparently required to jettison a failing portion of the station towards the end, and they narrowly escape death moving to the edge of this damaged structure.
When they get there one of them tricks the other two and seals himself off into the damaged portion, tells the others this is the only way, and sacrifices himself. Really? Why did he drag the other two out there then? Clearly, someone had a rough outline of a few things they wanted.
3D printed gun (check), exploding cylinder (check), crew sacrifice (check). How those things fit together into a coherent story was not a priority. These are just a few of the many things that are terribly wrong with this movie.
The cast is impressive and many are well known to movie fans. How did they get involved in this mess? If you have absolutely nothing else to do and have exhausted this month's Netflix catalog I suppose you could do much worse.
