Review of The Cleanse (2018) by Mmadnessgames — 11 Jul 2018
If Eraserhead and E.T. (the films) had a child, it might resemble something like The Cleanse.
Like most 2nd generation actors and directors, the film isn't as good as what came before it... But, it's a fun mix of Cronenberg and The Gremlins. Plus it has Angelica Houston.
Reminds me, in style, of a lot of offbeat 90's horror movies that were so bad they were funny. It is a self-aware version of an extremely ridiculous 90's horror film that takes itself too seriously.
The creature effects are great. It appears to be all props. I didn't detect any CGI throughout the film, from what I can remember.
The plot makes no sense. It doesn't flow naturally, either... The build up to their decision to leave, doesn't make sense. But, it doesn't ever bother trying to justify itself as logical or sensible.
Like a lot of the weird experimental VHS horror films I used to find at the back my old video store, this film appears to be totally disinterested in what it should be or what it should do.
It's a very strange film.
