Review of The Class (2008) by Jose Alejandro S — 04 Dec 2011
Oh my God this movie was good. BEYOND good! At its core, Entre les Murs is simply a slice-of-lime drama about a fictional account of the day-to-day activities in an inter-city French school, with mixed races and religions by the bagful.
But it is SO MUCH MORE! I still can't believe I was actually watching a feature film, and not a documentary; I honestly can't find a single flaw with the acting; absolutely every single character was spot-on.
I loved the different realities and perspectives, from the students to the parents to the teachers, and so on.. and there are nonstop questions. Tough questions, questions you yourself may not even be able to answer, regardless of how hard you search inside yourself.
Questions about life, questions about relationships, and the most frequent question of all: why? This film paints a grim, realistic portrait of reality; you will find yourself constantly expecting the film to take a positive spin on things, but it never happens.
Easily one of the best films I've seen this year; I don't care if you don't understand French, rent this movie now and force yourself to read the subtitles, because it's freaking fantastic.
. more so than any words I can write can hope to portray. And yes, this film WILL take you back to your youth, whether you want to or not >:D.
