Review of The Class (2008) by Tina S — 03 Apr 2009
Why this film is superior to most high school teacher/student films is that it strays away from a predictable paint-by-numbers, fairy-tale plot arc. The improvised, conversational dialogue is actually quite true-to-form of actual student-teacher interactions in high schools in the 2000s. The tension and animosity that develops between the students and teacher is much more realistic and palatable than any U.S./British film of similar genre.
The staff meeting dialogues don't work quite as well in terms of impact and realism, but do offer a break in class tension. The fact that happy endings and conflict resolutions are not a part of this movie's ending keeps the movie real in its message that school, more often than not, cannot be the sole rescuer of a developing child's tough predicaments (although they may valiantly try).
