Review of The Class (2008) by Eric F — 17 Apr 2009
As an American, I enjoyed seeing a true-to-life account of the French secondary school system. But what struck me most was that teaching high school is probably the same no matter where you are--it's challenging and often thankless.
The students were complex and the teachers were overworked yet committed. And what was most interesting was I wasn't sure if I was on the teacher's side or the kids' side in the end. But perhaps that was the point--to be grey.
One thing I didn't like was the filming style...I found the extreme closeups throughout the whole movie to be disorienting. I wanted the camera to pull back on many occasions.
