Review of The Class (2008) by Youssef H — 01 May 2009
It was a nice move from Cannes to accept this film, or this "Experiment" in the official selection. However, the face that it received the Palm D'or would be questioned. The film may be interesting, in a way, for those who are keen to watch the racial issues between adolescents in such a cosmopolitan city as Paris.
However, the choice of setting the film only inside the school & the classroom without taking you out to the characters' homes, & with no music, that only turns it into an "Experiment".
But not a smart, poetic, mature nor well crafted film like other films which tried to make different moves like: "Elephant, Paranoid park,, l'enfant, nor Cache". The result here is a dull, unengaging nor rewarding film that doesn't add anything to the audience neither thoughtfully nor artistically, lacking memorable execution & performances.
Very forgettable & highly overrated.
