Review of The Class (2008) by Jessy O — 06 Jul 2009
My high expectations (slightly) spoiled my enjoyment of this well-made film which blurs the boundaries between fiction and documentary. Fascinating insight into the French education system, which in some ways seems more enlightened than the British system when I expected it to be much more rigid and traditional.
Manages not to resort to cliché too often, but it's hard not to compare it to La Haine (in its treatment of 'melting pot Paris') or Etre et Avoir (in its treatment of 'a year in the life of a French school').
Great performances from all the cast, in fact it's hard to believe that this isn't an all-out documentary.
