Review of The Class (2008) by Daniel K — 12 Oct 2009
A movie with the boldness to really question just how much influence a well-intentioned teacher or even school itself can have over a student's life. Tackling the subject of inner-city Parisian schools with startling honesty and stark emotional clarity, 'The Class' is less about inspiration than the social and political structures within the school environment.
The entire thing takes place on campus grounds and mainly in the class of Mr. Marin as he attempts to engage his difficult students by relating his material to their lives - sometimes learning some surprising things himself.
He is stable, experienced and knows how to hanlde his kids, yet even he has a breaking point, the consequences of which set off a series of events that leads him to question just about everything he thought he knew.
Slow-building and incredibly engaging, stocked with wonderful characters imbued with naturalism by great actors.
