Review of The Class (2008) by Mark D — 21 Jul 2009
This is by far the best movie about secondary schools and about teaching I have ever seen. It puts Hollywood's standard narrative of the Superteacher who overcomes insurmountable adversity by just trying harder than everyone else and exhorting students to do better to shame.
As a former middle school teacher in urban and multicultural settings similar to those in the film, I was catapulted by this film back into my classroom and back into the emotional and intellectual vise that is teaching in those conditions.
I am a professor of secondary education now and I most definitely plan to show this film to my students.
