Review of The City of Your Final Destination (2009) by Dirk B — 09 Oct 2010
James Ivory and Ismail Merchant have given us tremendous films in the past, but for me, this isn't one that can join them. Ivory has taken a mis-step or two in the past, and this movie is probably a little better than mediocre for his level of work.
Omar Metwally just can't give a performance with impact or a performance that is as good as the ones of the rest of the cast. Anthony Hopkins and Laura Linney are in a different league and leave everyone else panting behind.
Many people say it's a dull or flat film. I didn't see that at all. I wasn't bored or consider this a flat movie. I just wasn't all that taken aback by it either. It was rather clichéd and obtuse, lacking the depth and the resplendence other Ivory films possess.
