Review of The Circle (2017) by David R — 27 Apr 2017
I saw this movie out of hope. Hope that Emma Watson could pull of a leading role and not live in Hermoine's shadow for the rest of bloody time. That I might get to know and love John Boyega in something other than his role as FN2187. That concepts and conflicts that are becoming more and more relevant in the primary world could be explored and popularized through the Hollywood lens. But alas, my hopes were for naught, and it was poo.
Fix it, sweet baby Jesus. What starts with poor acting and clumsy, elementary character development follows through with a plot so lackluster as to make Snakes On A Plane blush, and finishes with, well, not much. There is an obvious point to be made with a movie like this. And obvious ways in which to do so. None of those things happen. You're likely to leave with an impression that the intended protagonist is actually the one doing all the bad things... While the writers' intended antagonists are more or less sweet, innocent humans.
That said, it's bad enough to be watchable. Once the Interwebs have their way with this pile, I'm sure there will be nearly as much content for its stench as Get Out got for its genius.
TL;DR Circle somehow fantastically fails to do in 2 hours what Black Mirror could have done effortlessly with 30 minutes and an iPhone 3 camera.
