Review of The Circle (2017) by Bruce R — 11 Feb 2018
This movie had a good concept that started off good but quickly fizzled fast and just wasn't believable. The problem with the movie is that it was a good idea but it wasn't directed well. It wasn't believable.
Choices that were made didn't make sense. The guy playing Mercer was absolutely horrible in his acting. There were parts of intrigue that you thought were going to become really suspenseful and then they fizzle.
The climax of the movie made no sense and came out of nowhere. The movie couldn't decide what it wanted to be and couldn't decide on what themes to tackle. It seemed a bit all over the map and things just sorta came out of nowhere and happened with no build up.
I thought this was going to be a 'Big Brother' type suspense like The Net or something but it never really decided. And what exactly is The Circle? Is it like Facebook or Google? I mean so many things are so incredibly unbelievable like Tom Hanks putting cameras anywhere he wants like the beach with no regard for privacy, and having no accountability for Mercer's death.
So many laws broken and then the whole 'mandatory voting' thing - where did that come from? Where did Mae come up with that? That's the problem with Emma Watson's character. You never could figure out whether she was for or against The Circle.
She pivots in ways that are jilted and unbelievable. There was no explanation and it came out of nowhere and there's no way in hell that would ever happen. And I honestly don't think even in ultra-progressive San Francisco that people would go for that.
Very much a 'Meh' movie. Ultimately the best acting in the movie was Bill Paxton.
