Review of The Circle (2017) by John%20 M — 29 Apr 2017
Spoiler Alert: This review shares some elements of the plot.
"The Circle" is wise beyond its years and prescient as to asking the right questions for our times. Reviewers seem not to like the film. Reasons may include their own conscious or subconscious shame.
One example is the film's poignancy concerning America's poor turnout in recent elections. Another is the obvious allusions to exposing one's personal emails for public consumption. Hollywood and the Left's self-denial as to the Hillary email scandal and its own lackluster support of its candidate go without furthe explanation.
Another is the cult-like cultures of Facebook and Google. While universities across the globe adopted gmail to get free email, hangout and other services, the outrage when Google quietly announced its de-privitatization of content to enable marketing to users was short-lived.
The film itself features well-directed and reserved performances of heroines and quasi-villains. Crisply written and interweaving just enough but not too much conspiracy-theorist subplots, the film is a solid A-. Certainly, it outranks most of Hollywood's blah releases of the past two years, like Warren Beatty's over-coiffed and self-indulgent study of Howard Hughes and the universally overrated "La La Land.".
"The Circle" is good, clean fun and it asks tough questions relevant to the here and now. Go see it. As you walk out, you'LLC agree the only conspiracy behind its ratings are Facebook, Google, Hollywood insiders, and the Democratic Party.
