Review of The Cider House Rules (1999) by Cindy B — 01 Apr 2008
A meandering mess of a movie. You'd have to hear John Irving's Oscar speech to know this was a "pro choice" film. Tobey Maguire gives a maddeningly deadpan performance, totally devoid of emotion.
Michael Caine is wonderful, which about as good as it gets in this film. And I still have no idea what the cider house rules are or what that metaphor is supposed to mean, if it even is a metaphor. This is a paint by numbers "Oscar film" that fooled Oscar voters into believing it was Oscar worthy!
