Review of The Cider House Rules (1999) by Brendan N — 11 Feb 2018
This is one of the most amazing stories and one film that deserved more recognition for its stars. Caine shines as Larch and Lindo is scene chewing as Mr Rose, you can barely fault the film as it leads you down a very unpredictable path.
Maguire is an interesting choice for the lead, I don't tend to have him as a lead actor but he demonstrates something most actors would've struggled with here, quietness. The film is beautifully shot and every scene is crafted with careful detail, I almost forgot Hallstrom was such an amazing director.
This film is one of the films that shines in his resume, he has since focused on Spark novels, which have been for financial success as opposed to critic attention. This is just a wonderful film that deserves more recognition.
