There seemed to be a social statement viewed here by the main character as to whether the 'legal' drugs of suburban adults are in any way less harmful to body and mind than the illegal drugs youths experiment with.
People out of control in all areas? Watch the adults more carefully and see how they aren't really the solid, dependable people we saw adults as when we were kids. The human psyche is exposed in small amounts to show the cracks in humans.
