Review of The Chumscrubber (2005) by Julia L — 01 May 2008
A very enjoyable film with a moment towards the end of real pathos as a boy describes his friend's life to his mother after the friend had killed himself. Ralph Fiennes was wonderful as a seriously disturbed man whose depths and troubles are nothing but a hindrance to the picture perfect wedding his fiance is trying to create.
The parents in the film were a bit "Desperate Housewives", the score had the same plinky pizzicato music, but for the most part it was a clever and original satire about the entirely separate worlds inhabited by self-absorbed parents and self-absorbed teens.
I chose to see this because I like Justin Chatwin and I'm starting to think he has a very good knack of only appearing in quality films. Jamie Bell, the star, slouched and mumbled his way through the film, very believably.
Good film all round, I recommend it.
