Review of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010) by Antony G — 13 Jan 2013
Sadly for the Chronicles of Narnia it's had to compete with the likes of Lord of the Rings & Harry Potter during its time. Unlike Harry Potter this franchise has failed to grow up with each film thus probably alienating the fan base which has grown up with it so diminishing its audience.
Even if these two franchises weren't around I'd still feel it wouldn't live up to the expectations of anyone who grew up with the classic novels by C.S Lewis. Out of the three this is probably just the better but it's still a bore fest with very little happening & a feeling of nausea in your stomach with the sugar coated characters.
Any action is devoid of any reality but in this instalment there is some flesh on the bones of the final action sequence battling a sea monster. Only two of the original four return to Narnia but bring along their cousin who doesn't believe in this magical land of Narnia & becomes a tale of discovery for himself & much needed character building.
They are summoned to Narnia to set voyage on the Dawn Treader to seek out seven swords which will defeat evil & save Narnia & that's it in a nutshell. It's pure & simple which is always a good thing considering your audience will be of the younger variety with an attention span of a raisin!! But the older members will soon bore of it with very little going on.
There are morals in the story of not being tempted by the material things in life but they'll certainly be missed by someone on the wrong side of 10!
