Review of The Christmas Candle (2013) by Amanda B — 19 Dec 2018
Yes it's saccharine, and Susan Boyle clearly needed some acting classes (mainly for nerves). But these reviews scream of jumping on the hate bandwagon, This is actually a very good film, and it's so much better than all of the Christmas movies out this year.
furthermore some very well respected English actors are in this cast (What's not to love about Leslie Manville). And Hans Matheson can actually sing and his little duet with Susan Boyle is really pretty--why can't we admit and enjoy this? More importantly I liked the story and plot.
Mostly I liked that the script didn't dumb-down and explain away how everyone ended up with a miracle--which is truly the prime theme of the story and one which will never bee out of vogue. And if you truly watch Miracle on 34th street, that film is no less sweet or "faith based" as one critic here puts it.
You have to laugh when a critic calls a Christmas film bad because it's "faith based." It's like calling a film about sports too athletic. Clearly that's someone who needs a new hobby.
As far as I'm concerned all of them do.
