Review of The China Syndrome (1979) by Dave A — 06 Jul 2008
Much as I love her in Barbarella, I do understand Jane Fonda's frustration at being forever seen as a fantasy blonde stereotype in the public's mind. She made some powerful films in the 70s - Klute, Julia and The China Syndrome - which show her to be an excellent character actress.
The China Syndrome is a tense, compelling story about attempts to cover up an unsafe nuclear power plant; it is well written, and unexpectedly knowledgeable about the subject. Fonda is perfect as the reporter who knows something is wrong, and Jack Lemmon gives the performance of a lifetime as the power plant shift supervisor. Somehow, even Michael Douglas is good in this (can't stand him usually...).
