Review of The China Syndrome (1979) by Alvin Y — 14 Jun 2011
Now, finally after many days and months watching many thrillers, this one is the one that I think got it very entertaining and thrilling as hell. I mean it seriously, it's very well done, very well acted as well, very crafted, and yes it will make you think and care about what is going on for the rest of the film.
I don't really know anything about nuclear plants at all, only I learned most of it by watching, and most of those people that are on the plant explains well everything about the nuclear plant works, and how it could destroy almost half a country if an error is encountered, and this is basically true.
Speaking of performances, this movie has it all, Academy Award winners Jack Lemmon, Jane Fonda, and Michael Douglas, all are great in each of their roles, and I think they all deserve to be nominated any award here, or I don't know because this film was released 32 years ago, so they're old and I believe Lemmon already passed away, but Douglas and Fonda are still alive, and very strong, as they are in this film.
This movie doesnt pause for any character study or a little what's up, it goes directly to the suspense build-up until to the climactic ending which tells us what and why the Jack character is very arrogant about the plant, so does Fonda and Douglas, not until the end, we saw them hugging each other kinda like they're about to be falling in love but the film didn't show that much and I'm glad they didn't.
The director did also a great job of telling us about how these people will react and feel about all these troubles in the plant. Honestly, I didn't know anything about this movie at all before watching, and now you know after watching, I couldn't say any more praises and good things about "The China Syndrome".
And lastly, why does this film called China Syndrome, not because they're in China, but because the superheated nuclear materials would melt directly through the floor of the plant and, theoretically, keep on going until they hit China, so that explains well.
So, I don't think I have any more questions to this film, and I'm just gonna say one more time, and this time it is for real, "I like it, I like the performances, and I think it's one of the best films of the year (1979), two very big huge enthusiastic thumbs all the way to the very up up and away!!!
