Review of The Children's Hour (1961) by Brad K — 12 Jun 2011
A queer film about the closet, hatred, and repression. Shirley MacLaine plays a closeted lesbian, and Audrey Hepburn plays her best friend. I'm extremely surprised that this got past the censors, as it's pretty blatant lesbian, despite deletion of some scenes in the original play that even more blatanly portray MacLaine's character's lesbianism. What can I say, Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine in a melodrama about lesbians works out really well, though I'm also particularly biased. Oh, and with douchebags like the American Family Association still around and being given lip service as if they were legitimate medical authorities, the film is as relevant as ever.
Trigger warnings for a particularly gruesome ending, though I don't want to spoil it.
