Review of The Children of Huang Shi (2008) by Steve H — 31 Jan 2012
I read one review that said this film was slow. Far from it....most of the time it's scenes and pacing is quick, quick, sprint. Also the photography alone is worth 3 stars. I thought casting Jonathan Rhys Meyers as a man lost in a different world to what he's use to, was a touch of genius.
He's not suppost to feel at home here. Ok, there were some things that felt a little rushed. Namely, the exceptance of his new job looking after the children, and their cooperation to comply and learn so quickly.
But the biggest flaw for me was the 700 mile journey at the end....it was way too quick - (In real life it took 2 months) and I don't think how they survived (food and shelter) was explained that well.
But on the whole a very well made film based on a true story, and certainly worth seeing.
