Review of The Changeling (1980) by Andrew K — 05 Aug 2007
Very traditional ghost story, delivered in an outstanding fashion.
The music and sound design are phenomenal in setting up the mood, and in some cases even complementing rather important aspects of the story. The acting performances are absolutely spirited and real overall. It's a nicely slow-paced tension-fest with an atmosphere of melancholia and dread, that doesn't need jump scares to give you the chills.
Right before the turning point leading into the 3rd act, the movie went a little too slow to my liking, and today's audience has probably already seen lots of stories like this one (but those will for the most part be vastly inferior takes on the haunted house ghost story, compared to this movie).
Its strengths really outweigh its minor flaws, and I'd say its status as an eery, atmospheric horror classic is well deserved.
