Review of The Champ (1931) by Michael H — 13 Aug 2007
Some very fine acting and direction in this weepy tale. Wallace Beery (who always reminds me of a rougher Harvey Weinstein) gives the best performance of his career, and the kid, Jackie Cooper is pretty good too -certainly streetwise.
Though a fairly early talkie and a bit rough round the edges in terms of editing and storytelling, I found the cinematography to be astonishly inventive and "modern" at times. Worth seeing for a bit of sentiment too.
