Review of The Center of the World (2001) by Geonard Y — 30 Oct 2006
Directed by Wayne Wang.
Starring Peter Sarsgaard, Molly Parker.
A love story is usually between a waitress and a writer, a writer and an architect, an architect and a nurse, a nurse and a doctor, a doctor and an actress, an actress and a shy, gorgeous English bookstore owner. In ?The Center of the World? it?s the attraction between a self-made millionaire computer geek and a stripper. It sounds like ?Pretty Woman? but without the bubbliness and cheery soundtrack. Parker is not your happy hooker and Sarsgaard gets it off via the internet, it is however, in the strictest sense of the word, a love story. While the story is fairly easy to read, Wang handled it delicately, and balances the true and false with what is happening, and at the center of it all are the wonderful performances of Sarsgaard and Parker. Yes, some people would fall for the hooker and they don?t need to be the dying drunk type. All it takes is loneliness.
Best Scene: He does her, she breaks his heart.
