Review of The Cell (2000) by Lane B — 23 Mar 2010
So much potential, completely and utterly squandered. A pretty cool idea (which is the only reason it has a full star), but the plot was ludicrous, and the script just awful. They went way too fantastical in the mind-journeys which completely took me out of the movie itself.
Which is terrible. Lopez was painful. Vaughn was okay. D'Onofrio was... I really don't know what to say. He wasn't good, he wasn't bad. I just think they really squandered his talents here as well.
He played the role as well as he could, given what he was given to work with. A rewrite with a few better actors would've done better. Hold on. I just noticed it was directed by Tarsem Singh! That's awesome.
Not so much that he was attached, but that I actually thought part way through the movie that it felt a fair bit like The Fall. Very very interesting. Well, he did improve his craft. A movie I'd kind of wanted to see for a while, and was quite disappointed.
