Review of The Cave (2005) by Keeyana J — 01 Oct 2009
If there's anything movies have taught us it's that unless sharks are involved and preferably a John Williams score, watching people swimming is incredibly boring. But watching people swimming in a cave for more than an hour, now that's just mean.
Unfortunately The Cave was doomed from the start, with an all around inept cast, even by horror B movie standards, a deeply uninspired story and, worst of all, one of the least interesting movie monsters ever created.
Like a cross between the Alien and those bat-like thingies from The Mist, it's just completely unexciting and the clumsy directing doesn't help, making the action scenes messy and confusing. The film's monochrome palette is also very tiring to watch: everything is black and blue for an hour then some yellow comes in and it's like your eyes just finally wake up.
..but not for long. Basically, The Cave is simply not worth sticking around for and no, the end twist is not any good so don't even get your hopes up for that. Avoid if you can, otherwise make sure there's a pillow nearby to cushion your fall.
