Little-known to mainstream audiences, French director Chris Marker has been making charming and witty photo-essay films for decades now, and his latest - Chats perchés (The Case Of The Grinning Cat) - manages to straddle whimsy with profundity.

A pioneer of the film format (and a true antecedent to the likes of Michael Moore), he's a refreshing tonic for those who are tired of the brand of smug and smart-alecky documentaries which tell us what to think.

This review of The Case of the Grinning Cat (2006) was written by on 27 Jun 2007.
